  5.     When Detroit police chief William Hart and his former deputy
  6. were indicted last February for stealing $2.6 million from the
  7. city, it seemed that the troubled department had nowhere to go
  8. but up. Wrong. Last week, after an eight-month FBI
  9. investigation, 11 current and former police officers and five
  10. civilians were charged in a scheme to provide protection for
  11. drug dealers and money launderers. Among those arrested: Mayor
  12. Coleman Young's niece Cathy Volsan-Curry and her father, Willie
  13. Clyde Volsan Jr. The pair allegedly introduced the cops to
  14. undercover FBI agents posing as drug dealers.

  16.     The FBI, which videotaped the sting operation, claims that
  17. police officers protected seven air shipments of cocaine and
  18. laundered money, besides escorting the fake drug dealers around
  19. Detroit in police cars. "This is a sad day," said police chief
  20. Stanley Knox. "It's only a few people, but it's going to hurt
  21. everybody."
